Overview

UW Credit Union's Mortgage department is hiring. Join our team as a Mortgage Underwriter II, where you'll play a pivotal role in ensuring loan compliance with company policies and investor guidelines. You'll be responsible for conducting thorough analyses of loan files, leveraging your expertise in Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, FHA, and VA guidelines, as well as state and federal regulations.

Responsibilities

What You'll Do

  • Underwrite conventional, FHA/VA, and construction loans according to UWCU and investor rules.
  • Review loan documents for accuracy and completeness, gathering needed info for analysis.
  • Ensure property evaluations meet investor standards and address concerns effectively.
  • Advise the mortgage team on loan adjustments while maintaining risk/pricing policy.
  • Apply sound judgment to determine compensating factors in borderline cases.
  • Stay current on evolving residential underwriting guidelines.
  • Propose underwriting or production procedure updates.
  • Communicate missing information for incomplete loan applications to relevant staff, and educate on necessary modifications for approval and best financial products.
  • Ensure excellent member service by interacting positively and professionally with members, staff, and vendors.
  • Provide education and answers to questions about loan files and scenarios to other departments and ACD Group Extension callers.
  • Support Processors and Mortgage Loan officers by offering guidance on rates, products, underwriting guidelines, and decisions in a professional manner.
  • Actively contribute to team knowledge by explaining loan decisions to Mortgage Loan Officer staff, assisting with projects, maintaining data integrity, participating in meetings and activities, and assisting in staff training.
Qualifications

What You'll Need to Succeed

  • Associate degree in business administration, finance, or related field; relevant work experience will be considered in lieu of educational requirements.
  • 4+ years of experience in mortgage underwriting; analyzing and/or approving first mortgage loan applications.
  • Knowledge of FNMA / FHLMC / FHLB / Government / WHEDA / Secondary Market underwriting guidelines.
  • FHA Direct Endorsement and VA Automatic Authority.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of effective real estate lending and processing requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to work under and meet deadlines.
  • The ability to positively and professionally interact with members, staff and vendors.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with multiple priorities, solve problems independently, and process paperwork accurately and efficiently.
  • Excellent analytical and verbal and written communication skills.
